Hello and a question!

Hi, I'm new to this forum, been floating around a different one for some time. Thought I'd introduce myself, my names Pete and I have a 1998 Disco 1 V8.

I'm thinking about building some form of hybrid, not sure what yet, but I have a question regards the SVA test. If I build onto a Range Rover chassis with a Land Rover body and then go through SVA does the result mean I gain a new reg or can I keep the identity of the Range Rover? If I get a new reg does that then mean I will end up paying the higher tax bracket or does Q plate not fall under the post 2001 tax hike?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

if you use the RR chassis & it's associated running gear, I beleve the points system would let you keep the RR's reg plate, have a look in the Tech Archive index as the SVA info is all in there.

If you don't modify the rr chassis and keep enough of the running gear you won't need an sva.

In practice you will need to modify the chassis so you probably will need an sva test. Q plates are very rare nowadays, generally speaking if most of your running gear is from one vehicle you would retain that reg. You may be issued a new "age related" plate even if you use parts from variuos years.

if the original chassis/donor vehicle was registered befor the march 2001 cut-off date then I'd expect to pay the 180 road tax.

If you use the chassis (unmodified) and bits from that donor you will keep the reg.

If the chassis is modified DVLA will allocate a new chassis number. If you then use two major items from the donor you will get an age related reg.

If it is a pile of bits then a Q.

Both DVLA and VOSA said that a 'Modified' chassis could be anything. Even down to moving an engine mount.

Hi Pete,

You have asked a good question as I too am concerned about the same problem.

I understand the SVA issues well enough but as I still want to keep to a V8 and the new Tax bracket is a concern.

My running gear has been used off road for so long I do not have any details on the donor and I am concerned about my lack of proof of the parts source.

I hope that smeone can answer your Tax class question?

no, if you use the majority of RR chassis/running gear/suspension, DVLA should if the points count is high enough let you keep the RR's original reg number.
