Rob110 Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 Hi First post yay. Im about to order some springs for my 90, im going for police spec rangy HD greens on the front and red/whites on the back. (have i got that right) any idea what sort of lift they should give? If any one has gone for the same springs? do you think they will be ok with my winch and beefy bumper? Also i intend to fit shock droppers on the back and -2" turrets on the front, will they be ok with longer travel shocks (Procomp es9000) or do you think the shocks will bottom out? Thanks for any input Rob Quote
flatback90 Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 i've red and whites all round on mine and touch wood its been good. BUT they are very soft for road work bit like a barge down twisty bits! IIRC it gave me just under 2" lift. i didnt drop the shocks as topping out a shock is as bad as bottoming them. however if you intend towing i would steer clear as they are to soft on the back and tends to make the rear realy squat. saying that 3 of my mates a re running the same as me amd seem happy! pistonbrokescooby Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 hi done my military 90 8 years ago which i still own. after 3 changes got it right ,for spring upgrades choose red whites on the front 1150 poundage and yellows on the back ,can't remember poundage. 2 inch higher and level all round used bilsteins all round ,very firm ride all round .sports car handling . the rear bilstein snapped at the top mount last week after doing 30000 miles on this set up . yesterday replaced with de-carbons ,50mm longer .really pleased with the handling ,also drove a td5 which i am in the process of buying ,handles terrible after the other .emmm will have to sort out straight away . hope this helps .rc Quote
bishbosh Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 If you want a pair of rear -2" top mount I have a pair for sale - £25 + p&p if you are interested. Quote
Cat_J Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 Apparently procomp aren't worth it, they just break. So I've been repeatedly told. Maybe some higher quality ones? I'm looking at de carbon or OME for my new suspension setup as they are supposed to be good. I'm against lifts though. Quote
FridgeFreezer Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 If anything you want longer shocks with raised mounts, for example +2" shocks and +1" mounts (I think that works out correctly). Quote
Rob110 Posted October 11, 2008 Author Posted October 11, 2008 ok. so red and whites on the front and yellows on the back. will they sag with the winch and bumper? I have a nato hitch on the back so i wont be towing, so thats ok. At £9 a spring you cant go wrong. Fitting procomps as getting 4 of them nearly new for £50. The 90 will be mainly a weekend toy along with my lifted sj so im used to the dodgy handling Cheers Rob Quote
nicks90 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 dont fit lower shock mounts with standard or longer shocks - you will bottom out the shock and snap it! unless of course you are fitting huge tyres and have extended bump stops to prevent the tyre stuffing up into the arch and ripping the inner wings / rear tub to shreds. If you are running 33" tyres or smaller you dont need extended bumpstops, and so standard shock mounts will be fine with any standard length or +2" shocks. i have the procomp es9000 +2" shocks on my 90, with red/white springs up front and milly disco h/d rears on the back. Good road handling and can still compress each corner to the standard LR bumpstop and there is about 3mm travel left on the procomps before bottoming out! Bit close to be honest, because i'm sure if i hit a big bump at speed the standard rubber bump stop will compress more than 3mm and it may bottom out the shock. But they've been on for a few years now and they aint snapped yet - so i'll leave it as it is....... Quote
bishbosh Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 dont fit lower shock mounts with standard or longer shocks - you will bottom out the shock and snap it! From my own personal experience this is not necessarily the case. I ran -2" droppers with standard length Bilstein shocks for 5 years. Off roaded once or twice and never had a shock problem. Why? Because I cycled the suspension to check if I could lower the top mounts or not. I found that I could, so I did. Lowered top mounts are a good cheap way of improving rear articulation IMHO. They are not the solution to all suspension problems, but they are cheap Quote

Again it's had no problem as far as I know and it's certainly had some abuse. With the 3-Link on the front end, both suspensions get a workout off road too. Cheers Steve (+2 Gwyn Lewis mounts all round :P ) Quote

Or can you not get the axles compressed that far? Quote

bishbosh Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Not all 2" are the same..... Seriously, the compressed and extended lengths of shocks vary considerably even though they may all say +2". I would have thought +2" shocks and -2" mounts would lead to trouble, but as Steve says, you can do it in the real world....... Quote
