gruntus Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Gents, I have a steering box passed to me for use on my 90 and was told it was from an old Range Rover. Judging from Microcat it looks like an Adwest Heavyweight and it has 4 x bolt holes for securing to the chassis. It has a number on the casting listed as HBE11221 which I cant find reference to on Microcat or on LRSeries.com Can anyone shed any light on this box if I am correct on the above? I need to get bolts to attach it to the chassis and they dont appear to be metric. 7/16 UNF is mentioned for the Tie Bar and Microcat lists "Bolt" part NRC7616 which doesn't indicate thread size at all. Any ideas? As always help is apprecaited! Cheers G Quote
western Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 how many bolts secure the top cover on, will be either 3,4 or 6. that's how to tell which box it is, the HBE11221 isn't a LR part number, more likely a basic casing casting number or the manfacturers part number HBE could be Holborn Eaton. gruntus Posted October 25, 2009 Author Posted October 25, 2009 Hi Ralph, It has three large nuts on the outside, a shaft poking through and nylock on it and a bolt thats slightly off from the centre shaft. Cheers G Quote
western Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 photo below is a 4 bolt steering box, if you look directly down on your boxes top cover it probaly has 3 bolts holding the top cover on. Quote

Hi Ralph, Yep, like that but only three bolts (I said nuts didnt I?). I take it the the three bolts are an older model then? Being LR I presume that the steering box I have spanned across all ranges and then changed to four bolt at a particular year? Im hoping the bolts I took of the original manual box will be in good nick and the same size... Cheers G Quote
western Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 the 3 & 4 bolt boxes IIRC are interchangable as is the drop arm, the attachment bolts to the chassis are common to all, the 6 bolt box drop arm won't fit the other boxes. so if it works with no leaks or slackness, keep it as a spare or sell it on here or ebay. v8bertha Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Hi Chaps Happy to be corrected if anyone knows for sure, but I don't think the pipes that go into the box are interchangable as they have different threads. May be worth double checking. Judging from Microcat it looks like an Adwest Heavyweight and it has 4 x bolt holes for securing to the chassis. All of the steering boxes have 4 mounting holes, 3 bolt, 4 bolt and 6 bolt. Dan Quote

I just obtained the correct pipes and resevior from a 200TDi 110 and will try the threads this evening. If they fit ok I will try the steering box once I get the engine running. Cheers G Quote
