igntion wires

i am rebuilding a 1989 defender 110 or landrover 110 nut sure exactly which one because i am aware that 1989 was the year they changed but anyway i am now at the stage where i am ready to start the engine for the first time in three years, yes it has taken a while. i have wired it up with a split charge and carefully read the instructions that came with it, when i turned the key nothing happened not a single light on the dash or a click. i am no automotive electrician but im am nearly sure it is something to do with the starter motor or alternator not being earthed correctly or i hav the wrong wires connected to the ignition. would anybody be able to tell me which wires connect to the ignition. the landrover was a 2.5 petrol i think from reading the chassis number but now has an iveco 2.5td which i think was fitted by frogs island, any help would be greatly appreciated.
