Lorrick Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Hi Everyone I had the Engine upped to 170 bhp and as the manifold was blowing slightly before it was a lot worse afterwards, I took the manifold off and had it lapped flat again as it was about 1mm high out at the ends, Put all new studs in the head, new gasket, torqued it all up and hey presto 600 miles down the road (in one day and) it is blowing again, this time from the centre. Is there a better gasket other than the Tin one, and is it worth cutting the webs between the ports to let it flex a bit more, and would the Cat be giving a back pressure? Also I do about 1500 miles a week in the old girl and so it does get used a lot, the splines on the prop shaft (Original) although greased regularly are starting to Clonk when accelerating so I am looking into getting a new set of prop shafts, preferably with sealed UJ,s, any thoughts on a good one to go with, I do not do any off roading but a lot of road work with a Utility Wagon that weighs in at 2 1/5 ton Any Ideas Welcome Thanks Richard Quote
landroversforever Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Are you sure you got the manifold flat? Once its warped it should be unlikely to go again. Quote
Off Road Toad Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 My 90 is chipped to 190 bhp with a VNT, as soon as I had the remap the manifold warped. I machined it flat put a new gasket on and studs BUT i took the webbing out and put landrovers diff/sump sealant on each side of the gasket - no problems for 10,000 miles now. I don't have a cat on the exhaust. My work mates 130 had the Jeremy fearn chip years ago and continually blew the manifold, remapped by Je engineering and kept blowing, Finally on advise from moi he did the machining AND removed the cat- problem solved. If you have a restrictive exhaust system on a tuned TD5 especially a cat I think it causes high gas temps. Steve Quote
Lorrick Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 Thanks Steve and Ross I had the manifold lapped and was there helping in the workshop while it was done, and it was perfectly flat, I was told about the web removal and I will do that today, As for the Cat I will have to get a new Catless down pipe. Thanks to everyone Richard Quote
muddy Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 You canweigh the cat in for more than the price of a catless downpipe. Will. Quote
Lorrick Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 Hi Will I thought of that but what happens if it failes ann MOT on emissions ? Quote
landy andy. Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Diesels don't need cats, only vehicles with spark ignition, as in petrol engines. Andy Quote
