bluespanner Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 The manual box found in early p38s, I assume is an r380. Is it possible to bolt a normal lt230 transfer on to the back of this? Quote

bluespanner Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 Ok is that sort of thing easy to do? Or would it be easier to put the bell housing/input on a defender r380? The aim is fitting a BMW engine you see. Quote
MECCANO Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Isn't the mainsahft different as well on the p38 box??? Much easier to swap the pinion and bell housing if the pinion has the same number of teeth, and possibly shaft size. Quote
simonb Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 P38s normally had a Borg Warner transfer box so the output shaft and rear housing will be different. May also be different selector. Also not sure what the ratios are in the BW box, they may not match LT230 ones. Or would it be easier to put the bell housing/input on a defender r380? The aim is fitting a BMW engine you see. Didn't the P38s also have Land Rover V8s of 4 and 4.6L? I thought BMW engines only were fitted to Rangies when the replacement model to the P38 came out in 2002 or whatever year it was.. Quote

Hi, yes either option will work, 1) use the P38 R 380, the diesel will be a type 65A (first 2 digits of the serial number) ideally you want the stronger suffix K or L, you will have to change : mainshaft rear casing selector rail & yolk top shifter housing 2) use a defender R 380, TDi or TD5 (type 56A or 68A) note all 68A's are the stronger suffix K or L and change : bellhousing, 2 part type pinion shaft, all are 22 teeth so will fit the layshaft OK, Dave 1 Quote
